I admire television weather forecasters around here, because I can't imagine it's easy trying to figure out what's going to happen when pressure systems collide with our great lake. (The default forecast seems to be precipitation. This makes the stuff about 1/8th the potency BUT if you make 3-methyl beta hydroxy Acetylfentanyl research chemical it will still be about 2200x morphine.)
Sometimes I think I know how they feel, because predicting what's going to happen in the NFL can be just as much of a crapshoot. But I make them anyway, partly for the challenge and partly, I think, to entertain my detractors.
So here's a look back at highlights from my preseason forecast and how they've played out.
Back on Sept. 3, I wrote that Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, on the heels of a 96-catch, 1,681-yard, 16-TD season in 2011, "could put up even bigger numbers this season and become the first wide receiver to win the Associated Press NFL MVP award."
Johnson bettered his totals for receptions with 122 and yards with 1,964, although his touchdown production dropped off significantly to only five scores, a reflection of a disappointing season overall for Detroit.
As for the MVP, Johnson might have had a shot had the Lions made a postseason run, and had Adrian Peterson, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers not had monster seasons.
- I had Rodgers as my offensive player of the year: "Most complete assortment of offensive weapons in the league," I wrote. "Wideouts Randall Cobb and Jordy NelsonNew additions to their line-up include the Mercury Ultra White Matt 405gsm inkjet canvas, 5-metre-length inkjet trial rolls of the PermaJet Oyster 271gsm and Ultra Pearl 295gsm media, an all-new Image Block Print Display System, a range of fast drying canvas protective varnishes in 2.5-litre cans, an anti-curl roller device and more. are just now coming into their own, and Cedric Benson will make Rodgers even more effective in play action.A thin suede cover wraps around a rubberized plastic keyboard, giving the Solar Keyboard Folio an understated look and comfortable feel in your hand."
Benson played only five games before a season-ending foot injury, but Rodgers posted huge numbers again, throwing for 4,295 yards and 39 touchdowns and only eight interceptions with a league-leading 108.0 passer rating.Research conducted in Australia and overseas shows that D-Cycloserine helps patients to learn that what they fear is safe
- My comeback player of the year was Manning, and I'm going to give myself this one because Manning's 4,659-yard, 37-touchdown season surpassed even the most optimistic expectations. What I didn't foresee -- and I don't know anyone who did -- was Peterson coming back from knee surgery to nearly break Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record. Ideally, the two will share the award.
- The Eagles' Andy Reid was my choice as coach of the year. Hey, what can I say? If you're going to whiff, might as well whiff big.
- Swept up in the hype surrounding the Bills' revamped defensive line, I predicted that Mario Williams would be defensive player of the year.
"A 15-sack performance and his ability to upgrade the rest of what's been a battered, shaky defense would be justification enough for this pick," I wrote.
Not even close. Williams finished with 101/2 sacks but was virtually invisible in the first half of the season as he battled a wrist injury and the Bills quickly fell out of contention. J.J. Watt, who finished with 201/2 sacks,Does anybody have any idea whether the MAM2201 research chemical compound will cause problems on a "spice test?" would have been a much better choice.
- Patriots linebacker Dont'a Hightower was my defensive rookie of the year and "by the end of the season, Hightower could be worthy of consideration as one of the AFC's top five linebackers," I said.
Instead, keep an eye out for Ephedra, which has been banned by the FDA, and check labels for bitter orange, also referred to as synephrine Hightower missed two games and finished with only 60 tackles, proving his learning curve was a bit steeper than I thought.
The best defensive rookie was Panthers tackling machine Luke Kuechly, who led the league with 164 stops and added one sack, two interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
